fit out interior design trends 2021

what’s new in interior design for shops, restaurants, offices, and homes?

We recently spoke to Rebecca Vulic from X + O to get the low down on what’s going to be hot in 2021. Rebecca is an acclaimed and highly awarded international designer who has worked with big brands across the world. And when we say big, we mean it. She’s worked with brands like Kate Spade and Jurlique, just to name a couple. Rebecca Vulic is a highly creative and strategic thinker, who has experience across the retail, hospitality, and workspace sectors. Everyone we work with wants to know what the latest is when it comes to fit out interior design trends. Many are surprised that COVID-19 has even had an impact on the interior spaces that are starting to evolve.

the interview

Borg Projects: Have you noticed any changes in the retail sector when it comes to interior shop design and fit-out design?

X+O: Absolutely. We live in a digital age. Since Covid-19 people are choosing to shop online more and more. To entice people to shop in physical stores, the interior design will have to lure customers in.

Physical retail stores will need to romance customers and engage them more than they ever have with real-life experiences. In the current world, brands that will come out on top in the retail space are those that are ephemeral and flexible. Brands that focus on engaging customers and not just moving product.

Borg Projects: Are the trends in the hospitality sector similar?

X+O: No, they’re quite different. hospitality businesses are looking to incorporate more outdoor space into their venue. This is being seen in New York already.

Tables will be spaced out more, which may result in the reduction of bar seating and banquette seating. This is a significant change as bar seating and banquette style seating have both been favourites with the hospitality industry – they’re a well-known strategy for getting more ‘bottoms on seats’.

Furnishings will not be as comfortable as customers will not be encouraged to stay and dine for long periods. There will be less ‘lounging’ space in general.

Borg Projects: So, what about workspaces such as offices? Are there new trends emerging there too?

X+O: Definitely. Workspaces will evolve and it looks like more and more people will make a move to permanently working from home. This is something we’re seeing with large tech companies in Silicon Valley. Take Facebook as an example. Facebook’s staff will continue to work from home even after the pandemic ends.

I believe this trend will trickle down. We’ll see smaller commercial workspaces with large and spaced out meeting environments. We’ll also see more agile workspaces with hot desks instead of a desk for every person. This will encourage people to work from home and come into the office only as required.

We’re likely to see a real surge in the growth of co-working spaces for the same reasons.

Borg Projects: Does this then influence home design?

X+O: Yes. It will almost be a prerequisite for homes to be designed with well-equipped home offices and gyms. This again supports people to work from home.

Borg Projects: Colour trends are always changing. What colours and materials will be big in 2021?

X+O: We’re now seeing more people trying to connect to nature and being environmentally conscious. This is where will tend to see more of a use of natural materials, natural light and recycled and environmentally conscious use of materiality.

In the same way, colours that people are gravitating towards are earthy, connecting to nature. Greens are going to be extremely popular, from forest greens to mint greens. Blues will also be prevalent from dark navy to duck egg blue. There will also be a resurgence in colours like terracotta and beige.
